2011 Christmas newspaper

Our 2011 Christmas newspaper is stuffed full of juicy morsels about what makes newspapers such a compelling medium for advertisers over the festive season.

Retail’s messiah has arrived.

It’s been a tough year for retail, with Australian consumers having embarked on one of their biggest spending strikes in decades.

But that was then and this is the silly season. Santa’s almost here and the signs are hopeful.

A pre-Christmas survey* just conducted by News Community Media indicates that nearly 70% of people plan to spend the same amount on Christmas gifts as they did last year; around $489 per person on average.

While 23% have already stated stocking up on gifts, a whopping 74% have said they’ll start their gift shopping before December rolls around.  Good news for retailers indeed.

As for Christmas Day itself, 71% of people plan to spend about the same on Christmas Day food as they did in 2010, around $160**.

So look towards the light. There are some positive signs for a pre-disposed buying mindset around Christmas.

And as always, newspapers have been proven time and again to help drive sales when you need them most – Christmas time.
